Stonehurst Elementary Nature Exploration Area

Stonehurst Elementary is a school in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) in Oakland, California. Our design team was called out to work on this nature playground project by KABOOM!, a national nonprofit committed to ending playspace inequity. Because of the Children At Play Network’s expertise in creating nature play spaces, we were identified as the partner to be brought in to consult with KABOOM! to help the OUSD in their goal to put nature exploration areas in every playground in their district.

Students from Stonehurst Elementary play among features created from local natural materials.

This site plan utilizes software that can  provide site-specific solar analysis to determine where new trees should be planted on the playspace for optimal shading.

Our Team shows where different surface materials are recommended to enhance accessibility needs, plant health, and to provide fall zones for play elements.

To turn a flat square corner of a field into a nature playspace, we designed an irregularly shaped footprint with raised mounds that create a more natural feeling environment.
