Catholic Charities

Catholic Charities of Louisville, KY. The CAPN helped Catholic Charities carve out an outdoor natural playspace in what had been a parking lot, providing an opportunity for natural free play in an impossible site.

Catholic Charities of Louisville, Kentucky decided to prioritize including an outdoor play space for their children’s program when developing their new building on Broadway. The unconventional site (a corner of a paved parking lot) provided a unique design opportunity that allowed the CAPN to bring some elements of natural free play into what had previously been a square of pavement.

Catholic Charities prioritized creating an outdoor playspace on a site that didn’t previously have any space for a playground. Planting trees and including play features made from natural materials provided a respite amongst the urban environment.

Children visiting Catholic Charities with their families now have an inviting and safe outdoor playspace while their parents receive supportive services at the center.

The playspace also incorporated art features and a music wall to give children a variety of play experiences.

The site plan illustrates how the design team worked with the small site to find the optimum amount of play features, plants, and accessibility.

The CAPN created a solar analysis to study how much sun the site received during different seasons and times of day, informing the best locations for new trees.
