Bridge Kids at Play – July 22, 2017

Bridge Kids International offered a Well Living Fest at Ben Washer Park on Saturday, July 27, 2017 and the Bernheim Children at Play Network was there in force.  It was an exceedingly hot day but that didn’t deter a sizeable crowd from gathering to take part in one of our free play days.  Armed with ropes, tarps, boxes, tape, and all manner of loose parts our trained free play facilitators helped the children do what children do best…play.  It may sound like it’s a simple thing to simply let children play.  In reality the work of providing an environment where children engage with unstructured play, or free play, takes a great deal of planning.

We loved the opportunity to work with the Bridge Kids team and neighborhood organizers to offer this play day.  Bridge Kids International works with “young people of Africa and the African Diaspora to build sustainable communities.”  One of the best ways to begin a new relationship with an organization like Bridge Kids is to join them in play.  Below are some photos from the day.

Boxes beat everything. Well…except ice cream.
Kid size high rise.
Tape, cardboard and a future architect. This child played for hours with one box and then asked to take it home. The answer was “certainly.”
We handed our camera to one child and got some great photos.
Cardboard boxes are open ended. They become so many things.
Loose parts encourage cooperative play.
Sticks and rope provide hours of play.
Nothing beats a temporary rope swing.
