Jill Leckner, Lecturer with the UofK School of Architecture brought a talented crew of first year architecture students to Bernheim and Playcosystem on March 28th, 2022. They are exploring Bernheim as inspiration for a studio course. The students are deriving architectural inspiration from nature as a way to reinforce the importance of being sensitive to context – site, history, geology, natural processes – and how projects occupy a specific place. The students were asked to think about the symbiotic relationship of nature and architecture.
During their visit we explored the Visitor Center (LEED Platinum), the Edible Garden (Living Building Challenge) and the natural play areas of Playcosystem. Their next step will be to complete a design project and share it within their academic community at the University of Kentucky. We are anxious to see what comes of their explorations. Perhaps there is a future playground designer among them.
